Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.
Players will gain the ability to challenge certain decisions from the official, echoing the protocol currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development comes just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review other situations, such as:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Potential interference end of a rally.
Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.
A Recent Example
An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was out or in.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
